Overview

Karasawasan Castle is a designated National Historic Site located on a 240-meter-high mountain in Sano, Tochigi. Constructed in 1489 by Narihira Sano, the site served as a defensive stronghold for the Sano clan for over 200 years. The ruins feature extensive stone wall remnants, known as 'ishi-gaki', which are rare for mountain castles in the Kanto region. Visitors can explore the remnants of the main bailey and defensive moats carved directly into the bedrock. The site played a strategic role during the Sengoku period due to its command of the surrounding plains. Much of the surviving stonework dates back to the late 16th century, reflecting the evolution of fortification techniques during that era. The castle was decommissioned in 1602 following the order of the Tokugawa shogunate.
