Overview

Batería de Castillitos is a decommissioned coastal artillery battery located at 250 meters above sea level on Cape Tiñoso in Cartagena, Spain. Constructed between 1929 and 1933, the site was designed to protect the strategic naval base of Cartagena. It features two massive Vickers-Armstrong 381mm cannons, each 17 meters long, capable of firing projectiles weighing nearly one ton over a range of 35 kilometers. The architecture follows the 'eclectic-medievalist' style, utilizing local stone and decorative elements that mimic a castle facade to camouflage the military function. The battery was declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 1997. The complex includes underground ammunition bunkers, searchlight emplacements, and barracks integrated into the rocky terrain. It remained operational until 1994 when the coastal artillery units were dissolved. The site is currently maintained as an open-air historical attraction overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The coastal geography provides clear lines of sight spanning the Gulf of Mazarrón.

Insider tips

Bring a high-powered flashlight to explore the dark, unlit internal bunkers and ammunition corridors.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear, as the paths around the gun emplacements are uneven, rocky, and often littered with loose gravel.

Carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no amenities, cafes, or water sources located at the summit.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive a large vehicle up the mountain road as it is narrow, winding, and features tight hairpin turns.

Etiquette

Avoid climbing on the cannons or entering restricted areas marked by warning signs, as some structures remain fragile or structurally unstable.
