The fortress is uniquely situated within a loop of the Tanaro River, which historically served as a natural defensive moat.

5

It contains the 'Cappella di San Carlo', which was used by the garrison and retains vestiges of its original religious function.

Overview

The Cittadella di Alessandria is an 18th-century star-shaped military fortress located on the left bank of the Tanaro River. Built by the House of Savoy starting in 1728, it remains one of Europe's most significant examples of military architecture. The site covers approximately 24 hectares and consists of six large bastions connected by defensive walls. It served as a strategic stronghold during the Napoleonic era and the Italian Risorgimento. Today, the site functions under the care of the FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano) delegazione. Visitors can access specific areas of the fortification, including the historic armory and former barracks. The structure is noted for its geometric precision, which was designed to minimize the impact of artillery fire.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes as the ground is uneven, gravel-heavy, and expansive.

Bring a hat and sunscreen as there is very little natural shade across the large open parade grounds.

Check the FAI website for guided tour availability, as much of the site is restricted to group access for safety reasons.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to explore the perimeter outside of designated guided paths, as parts of the masonry and subterranean galleries are structurally hazardous.

Good to know

Access is highly dependent on guided FAI tours and seasonal events; check the local FAI delegazione calendar for specific visitation dates.

Etiquette

Respect all safety barriers and restricted area signage; the fort has many abandoned, unstable structures that are off-limits.
