Interesting facts
1

The karst formations here are composed of limestone deposited by coral reefs approximately 300 million years ago.

2

Controlled burning, known as 'yamayaki', is performed annually to prevent the encroachment of shrubs and maintain the open grassland ecosystem.

3

The plateau contains hundreds of limestone caves, including several with complex river systems and underground waterfalls.

4

The high mineral content of the limestone creates unique soil conditions that support rare calcicole plant species found only in such environments.

5

The landscape is often referred to as 'Sheep's Flock' due to the visual resemblance of the white rocks protruding from the grass to grazing sheep.

Overview

Hiraodai is one of Japan's three major karst plateaus, characterized by thousands of limestone formations known as lapies scattered across high-altitude grasslands. The plateau sits at an elevation of 300 to 700 meters, forming a distinctive white-rock landscape that contrasts with the surrounding green vegetation. The area features extensive subterranean cave systems, including the popular Senbutsu Limestone Cave. Much of the plateau is protected within the Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park. Visitors can access a network of hiking trails that traverse the undulating hills and exposed geological features. The terrain is largely treeless due to the thin, alkaline soil conditions and traditional controlled burning practices. The plateau provides panoramic views stretching toward the Suo Sea and the mountains of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots with good ankle support to navigate the uneven, rocky limestone surfaces.

Bring a waterproof headlamp or flashlight if you intend to explore the unlit sections of the limestone caves.

Carry adequate sun protection as the plateau offers very limited natural shade throughout the exposed hiking trails.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike during the peak summer heat without sufficient water, as there are few shaded areas to escape direct sunlight.

Good to know

Trails may be inaccessible during extreme weather events; some specific limestone caves periodically close for safety inspections after heavy rainfall.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the delicate karst ecosystem and avoid disturbing local grazing livestock if present.
