Overview

Castello di Lombardia is one of the largest and most significant medieval castles in Italy, positioned at the highest point of Enna at 970 meters above sea level. It historically served as a strategic military fortress due to its commanding 360-degree views of the Sicilian interior, including Mount Etna and the Madonie mountains. The site features an extensive perimeter wall originally fortified with twenty square towers, of which only six remain today. The most prominent remnant is the Torre Pisana, the tallest and best-preserved tower on the premises. The castle complex spans an area of approximately 26,000 square meters, divided into three courtyards. It derives its name from the Lombard mercenaries who were stationed there during the Norman period. Archaeological evidence suggests the site has been utilized since the prehistoric era, long before the construction of the current medieval fortifications. The central courtyard, known as the Piazzale delle Armi, is frequently used for open-air theater performances.
