The Late Minoan Cemetery of Armeni is one of the most significant necropolises from the Late Minoan III period, dating approximately between 1390 and 1190 BC. The site contains over 200 chamber tombs carved directly into the soft limestone bedrock, arranged along a gentle hillside. These tombs are accessed via a dromos, or entrance passage, leading to a vaulted chamber where multiple burials were interred. Excavations have revealed diverse artifacts, including larnakes (clay sarcophagi) painted with intricate motifs, bronze weapons, gold jewelry, and seal stones. Unlike many other archaeological sites, the cemetery is situated within a naturally shaded oak forest, providing a unique environment for the ruins. It served as the burial ground for a nearby, yet still unidentified, Minoan settlement. The configuration of the tombs suggests a structured social hierarchy among the buried population. It remains the largest excavated cemetery of its period in Crete.
