Overview

Izushi Eirakukan is the oldest surviving kabuki theater in the Kansai region, originally constructed in 1901. The wooden building features a traditional stage design with a 'mawari-butai' revolving floor mechanism operated by hand beneath the stage. It ceased operations in 1964 but underwent a major restoration in 2008 to return to its original Meiji-era architectural state. Visitors can walk through the backstage areas, including the dressing rooms and the basement 'naraku' where stagehands manually rotate the stage. The venue hosts annual kabuki performances featuring major contemporary actors, continuing a century-old cultural tradition in Izushi. It serves as a historical archive of Meiji-period entertainment infrastructure.
