Overview

The Royal Castle in Chęciny is a 13th-century hilltop fortification located on the Castle Mountain (Góra Zamkowa) at an elevation of 367 meters. Historically, it served as a residence for the Polish royal family, a military fortress, and a state treasury. The site features two cylindrical towers, a rectangular residential tower, and reconstructed defensive walls. Visitors can ascend the towers for panoramic views of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains and the town of Chęciny below. Archeological excavations have identified medieval ceramic shards and iron implements within the ruins. The castle was never conquered by military force but suffered structural degradation following the Swedish Deluge in the 17th century. It remains a partially preserved ruin stabilized through modern conservation efforts.
