Overview

Erie Bluffs State Park encompasses 587 acres of land along the Lake Erie shoreline in Pennsylvania. Its primary feature is a 90-foot-high bluff that stretches for one mile overlooking Lake Erie. The park protects the largest remaining tract of Black Cherry-Oak forest in the region. Visitors can access the beach via a steep, unpaved trail that descends from the bluff top. The grounds contain approximately 3.5 miles of hiking trails, including the Lake Shore Trail and the Bluff Trail. The park remains largely undeveloped, maintaining a focus on habitat preservation rather than recreational facilities. It is located approximately 12 miles west of the city of Erie. The area is part of the Pennsylvania state park system and is managed by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Insider tips

Bring sturdy hiking boots, as trails can be uneven, muddy, and steep near the lakefront.

Pack insect repellent, particularly for the forested sections during summer months.

Cell phone service can be inconsistent within the deeper wooded ravines.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the bluff faces directly, as the shale is highly unstable and prone to landslides.

Etiquette

Carry out all trash; stay on marked trails to prevent erosion of the fragile bluff face.
