The lighthouse was manufactured in France and transported to Brazil in pieces before assembly in 1872.
It is one of the few remaining maritime beacons from the imperial period still in active operation in Brazil.
The base of the structure sits approximately 30 meters above sea level to maximize visibility for incoming ships.
The light mechanism underwent modernization from its original oil-burning lamp to an automated electric system.
The Morro das Conchas, where the lighthouse is positioned, serves as a natural barrier against the prevailing coastal winds.
Ilha do Mel, where the lighthouse is located, is a protected state ecological reserve with strict limitations on vehicle traffic.
The Farol das Conchas, or Lighthouse of the Shells, is a historic maritime beacon located on the northern tip of Ilha do Mel in Paranaguá, Paraná. Built in 1872 by order of Emperor Dom Pedro II, the cast-iron structure stands atop the Morro das Conchas to guide vessels entering the Paranaguá Bay. It remains a functional navigation aid while serving as a primary viewpoint for the island's coastline. Access to the lighthouse requires ascending a concrete staircase built into the hillside. The surrounding area consists of protected Atlantic Forest, part of the Ilha do Mel State Park. Visitors can observe the transition between the island's north and south beaches from the elevated observation platform. The structure is one of the oldest in the region, maintained by the Brazilian Navy.
From the observation deck at the top, looking out across the Atlantic Ocean and the neighboring bays.
Wear sturdy footwear as the path up the hill involves uneven ground and a steep staircase.
Carry plenty of water and sun protection, as there is limited shade during the climb.
Visit during low tide to explore the beach area at the base of the hill after descending.
Attempting the climb during heavy rain, as the stairs can become slippery and dangerous.
Stay on marked trails to protect the surrounding vegetation; do not attempt to climb the structure itself.
