The temple complex is divided into three main zones: Todo, Saito, and Yokawa, with Todo serving as the historical and administrative center.

Overview

The Todo (East Pagoda) area serves as the central hub of Enryaku-ji, the headquarters of the Tendai school of Buddhism on Mount Hiei. The Konpon Chudo, designated as a National Treasure, is the principal hall housing a flame that has been kept burning for over 1,200 years. This mountain temple complex spans a vast area along the border of Shiga and Kyoto prefectures. The current Konpon Chudo building was reconstructed in 1642 under the patronage of the Tokugawa shogunate. It features an integrated architectural style where the sanctuary and prayer hall are unified under a single massive roof. The site includes the Daikodo (Lecture Hall), which preserves statues of various patriarchs of the Tendai sect. Visitors traverse mountain paths connecting several distinct sub-temples throughout the precinct.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes to navigate the steep, uneven stone staircases between buildings.

Bring a light jacket as temperatures at the mountain summit are significantly cooler than in downtown Kyoto or Otsu.

Start your visit at the Todo area to see the most iconic structures before trekking to the more remote Saito and Yokawa zones.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk the entire perimeter of the mountain complex without checking the map, as distances between the three main zones are significant.

Good to know

Open year-round, but specific sub-temples may occasionally restrict access during private ceremonies or winter periods.

Etiquette

Remove shoes when entering temple halls, maintain a quiet volume, and do not photograph the interior altars or religious statues.
