Overview

The Scientific Bibiena Theater, or Teatro Scientifico, is a masterpiece of late-Baroque architecture designed by Antonio Galli da Bibiena and completed in 1769. The interior features a unique bell-shaped plan with four tiers of wooden boxes arranged in a vertical design. It was originally commissioned by the Accademia Virgiliana for both scientific assemblies and musical performances. In 1770, a 13-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed here, an event his father Leopold described as one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. The walls are decorated with intricate monochromatic stucco and paintings by local artists. Unlike traditional theaters, the venue retains its original layout without significant 19th-century structural modifications. It continues to function as both a monument and a venue for cultural events in Mantua. The venue is housed within the Palazzo dell'Accademia Nazionale Virgiliana.
