Overview

Basilica di San Miniato al Monte is a Romanesque structure situated on one of the highest points in Florence. Construction began in 1013 under the patronage of Emperor Henry II. The exterior features a distinctive geometric facade made of white Carrara marble and green Prato serpentine. Inside, the church contains a 13th-century mosaic in the apse and the Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal. The crypt, which predates the main church, houses the relics of Saint Minias, an early Christian martyr. The adjacent graveyard, the Porte Sante, contains the burial sites of notable figures including Carlo Collodi, the author of Pinocchio. The monastic complex remains active, with the resident Olivetan monks producing honey, herbal teas, and liqueurs. It is widely considered one of the finest examples of the Florentine Romanesque style.
