Overview

Biserica din Deal, or the Church on the Hill, is a prominent Gothic landmark located at the highest point of the Sighișoara Citadel. Construction began in 1345, though significant architectural modifications occurred through the late 15th century. It stands on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque basilica. The structure features a distinctive polyptych altar and well-preserved 15th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes. It serves as the primary parish church for the local Evangelical community. The interior showcases a collection of Transylvanian Saxon epitaphs and stone sculptures. It is connected to the Sighișoara Citadel's lower town by the 17th-century Covered Scholars' Stairs.
