Overview

Anadoluhisarı is the oldest surviving Ottoman fortification in Istanbul, constructed between 1393 and 1394 under the orders of Sultan Bayezid I. Built at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, the fortress was strategically designed to control maritime traffic and weaken the Byzantine Empire’s supply lines. The structure occupies a site where the Göksu River meets the Bosphorus, covering approximately 7,000 square meters. Its primary component is a 25-meter-high keep surrounded by walls that feature defensive towers. Despite its proximity to the water, the fortress was largely bypassed for major military roles after the construction of the larger Rumelihisarı on the opposite European bank. The site underwent an extensive restoration process completed in 2023 to secure its structural integrity. Today, it serves as an open-air museum and a significant historical landmark within the Beykoz district. The interior space is integrated with the surrounding neighborhood, allowing visitors to walk near the original stonework. It remains a rare example of early Ottoman military architecture in the region.
