Overview

Hirayu Waterfall is a 64-meter tall, 6-meter wide cascade located in the Okuhida region of Gifu Prefecture. It is officially designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls by the Ministry of the Environment. The waterfall originates from the melting snow of the Norikura mountain range. A walking trail connects the main parking area to the base of the falls, involving a moderate incline. During winter, the waterfall freezes completely, forming a massive vertical ice pillar. The surrounding forest consists primarily of deciduous trees, which turn vibrant colors in autumn.

Photo spot

The viewing platform located at the end of the forest trail provides an unobstructed perspective of the full drop.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip hiking boots as the trail can be damp and uneven.

Carry trekking poles if visiting in spring or autumn when the path may be muddy.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the temperature drops significantly near the waterfall mist.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike in standard street shoes or flip-flops, as the path contains loose gravel and steep sections.

Good to know

The access trail may be closed during heavy winter snowfall or extreme weather conditions; check local conditions in the Hirayu Onsen visitor center before hiking.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the forest floor; do not attempt to climb the rock face near the waterfall.
