Overview

Renge-ji is a Pure Land sect Buddhist temple located in the Kamitakano area of northern Kyoto. Originally built in the 12th century, the temple was later reconstructed at its current site during the Edo period. Its primary feature is a Muromachi-style strolling pond garden designed by Ishikawa Jozan. The garden centers on a pond shaped like the character for heart (shin), surrounded by carefully placed stones and maple trees. The main hall houses a notable statue of Shaka Nyorai and a portrait of Prince Shotoku. It remains a quiet, off-the-beaten-path site compared to more central Kyoto temples.
