Overview

The Ikaho Onsen Stone Steps comprise a 365-step staircase serving as the central artery of the historic Ikaho hot spring town. This stone-paved path connects the town's upper and lower thermal water sources. The steps are lined with traditional ryokan, souvenir shops, restaurants, and public bathhouses. The current structure originated in the Tensho era (1573–1592) as a urban planning initiative to distribute water to local inns. The steps are etched with the names of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. During the winter, the area is illuminated in the evenings. The path leads directly to the Ikaho Shrine at the summit.
