Overview

Apple River Canyon State Park is situated in the Driftless Area of northwestern Illinois, a region bypassed by the last continental glacier. The park features steep limestone bluffs, deep ravines, and the winding Apple River. It offers five miles of hiking trails that traverse oak-hickory forests and prairie remnants. The terrain is notably rugged compared to the surrounding flat plains of the state. It provides 49 Class C campsites available for tents and small trailers. Wildlife in the park includes white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various species of migrating songbirds. The canyon walls expose Silurian-age dolomite rock formations.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots, as trails can be slippery and uneven near the water.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months, as the canyon floor remains humid and prone to mosquitoes.

Check the official park website for trail closure notices before arrival, as heavy rain frequently causes flooding along the riverbanks.

What to avoid

Attempting to swim or wade in the Apple River during high-water periods due to strong currents and submerged obstacles.

Good to know

Campgrounds are closed during the winter season.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect sensitive limestone cliff vegetation; pack out all trash to maintain the wilderness area.
