The name Areopagos literally translates to 'Hill of Ares'.
The council that met here was composed of former archons, the highest magistrates of the city-state.
The hill was the site of the first court of law in Athenian history to settle criminal disputes.
Due to the slippery nature of the marble steps, the site was historically referred to as the 'Cursed Hill'.
A bronze plaque at the foot of the hill commemorates the speech given by Saint Paul to the Areopagus.
The council's power was curtailed in 462 BC by Ephialtes, shifting judicial influence to the democratic courts.
Aeschylus's play 'The Eumenides' depicts the trial of Orestes occurring on this very location.
The hill served as a lookout point for the city due to its strategic elevation over the agora.
Areopagus Hill, also known as Mars Hill, is a rugged marble outcrop located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens. Historically serving as the primary judicial council of the city, the site functioned as a supreme court for homicide and religious trials. The name derives from the god Ares, whom legend claims was tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon’s son. In the 1st century AD, the apostle Paul delivered his famous sermon to the Athenian philosophers from this location. The surface consists of uneven, polished limestone worn smooth by centuries of foot traffic. Visitors have direct access to the summit via a set of carved stone stairs. The site offers an unobstructed, elevated view of the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the modern cityscape of Athens. Archaeological excavations have identified the foundations of a Roman-period building, possibly a tribunal, at the base of the hill.
The highest point of the rock facing the Propylaea of the Acropolis.
Wear shoes with excellent grip, as the ancient marble surface is extremely slippery even when dry.
Bring a flashlight if visiting during the transition to twilight to navigate the uneven steps safely.
Visit on a weekday morning to avoid the high density of sunset crowds.
Do not attempt to climb the hill during or immediately after rainfall, as the marble becomes dangerously slick.
Maintain a respectful tone; this site is considered a significant religious and historical landmark.
