Overview

The Old Cathedral of Vyborg, also known as the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Olav, stands as a ruined historical landmark in the center of Vyborg. Originally constructed as a wooden church in the 14th century, the structure was rebuilt in stone between 1493 and 1494. Following multiple sieges and the heavy bombing of the Winter War in 1940, only the outer stone walls and the bell tower remain standing. It served as the primary cathedral for the Diocese of Vyborg during the Swedish period. The site is a rare example of medieval Finnish-Swedish ecclesiastical architecture in the Leningrad Oblast. Today, it remains an unpreserved ruin reflecting the tumultuous history of the Karelian Isthmus.
