Overview

The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, locally known as the Ponte JK, is a steel and concrete arch bridge spanning Lake Paranoá in Brasília. Designed by architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mário Vila Verde, it was inaugurated in 2002. The structure features three asymmetrical 200-foot-tall steel arches that crisscross the deck diagonally. This design allows the structure to support a 1,200-meter span while maintaining a low-profile aesthetic across the water. It was built to connect the Plano Piloto with the residential sectors of the southern lake region. The bridge has received multiple international engineering awards, including the Gustav Lindenthal Medal. It is a dual-deck structure accommodating both vehicular traffic and pedestrian walkways.
