Overview

The Acueducto de los Milagros is an exceptional example of Roman engineering located in the northern outskirts of Mérida, Spain. Constructed during the 1st century AD, the structure stands at 25 meters in height and spans approximately 830 meters in length. It utilized a mixed construction technique of granite blocks and alternating rows of red brick, a distinct feature of local Roman building practices. The aqueduct was originally designed to transport water from the Proserpina reservoir to the Roman colony of Emerita Augusta. Its name, 'Miracle Aqueduct,' derives from the local awe inspired by its ability to remain standing through centuries of abandonment. The site is integrated into a public park, allowing visitors to walk directly underneath the three tiers of arches. It remains one of the best-preserved hydraulic works in the Iberian Peninsula. Recent preservation efforts focus on the structural integrity of the remaining granite pillars and brick reinforcements.
