Overview

Ioki Cave is a sea cave carved into a coastal cliff by wave erosion, later uplifted to its current position inland. The site is a designated Natural Monument of Japan because it hosts a unique ecosystem of over 30 species of ferns. A stream flows through the cavern floor, creating a temperate, humid microclimate that supports rare shade-loving vegetation. Visitors traverse a wooden walkway that extends through the cave and into a lush, gorge-like forest valley behind the cliff. The cave walls expose geological strata, including fossils and shell layers, revealing the area's marine origins. The interior environment remains significantly cooler than the outside temperature, even in summer.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, slip-resistant footwear as the wooden walkways and cave floor can be very wet and slippery.

Bring a light jacket if visiting in the middle of summer, as the temperature drop inside the cave is significant.

Carry mosquito repellent, as the humid forest area outside the cave can be prone to insects.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the cave walls or touch the fern colonies, as they are protected biological specimens.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on the designated wooden walkway to protect the sensitive fern habitat.
