Overview

The Mattapalli Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is a historic cave temple situated on the banks of the Krishna River in Telangana. The presiding deity, Lord Narasimha, is self-manifested (Swayambhu) on a rock face inside the main sanctum. The temple is one of the five Narasimha Kshetrams of the region, collectively known as the Pancha Narasimha Kshetras. The sanctum remains partially submerged during high water levels of the river. Devotees perform rituals by descending a small flight of steps into the narrow cavern. The architecture reflects a cave-style layout rather than a traditional multi-storied gopuram structure.

Photo spot

The elevated stone steps overlooking the Krishna River provide the best panoramic view of the temple's natural setting.

Insider tips

Check local news or temple bulletins for river water levels before visiting during the monsoon season.

The temple floor can be slippery; wear footwear with good grip that is easy to remove at the entrance.

Prepare for a queue, as the narrow cave entrance allows only a few people to enter the sanctum at a time.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to enter the sanctum if the river water has breached the lower steps during heavy rain, as the area can become inaccessible.

Good to know

The temple may experience restricted access to the sanctum during monsoon floods when the Krishna River rises into the cave.

Etiquette

Traditional attire is required; men must remove shirts before entering the sanctum; women should wear modest clothing covering shoulders and legs; footwear must be left outside the temple complex.
