Interesting facts
1

The deep red color of the Badlands is caused by high concentrations of iron oxide, or rust, within the shale.

2

The formation dates back to the Ordovician period, approximately 450 million years ago.

3

Improper agricultural techniques in the early 1900s, specifically over-farming and soil removal, triggered the accelerated erosion that formed these gullies.

4

The Ontario Heritage Trust acquired the site in 2002 to protect it from increasing recreational damage.

5

Geologically, the feature is a rare window into the Queenston Formation that underlies much of the Niagara Escarpment.

Overview

The Cheltenham Badlands feature exposed Queenston Shale, a soft, red sedimentary rock formation eroded into undulating hillocks and gullies. Located in Caledon, Ontario, the site is managed by the Ontario Heritage Trust. The landscape was created by poor farming practices in the early 20th century, which stripped the soil and exposed the underlying soft shale to water erosion. The site underwent a major restoration project completed in 2018 to stabilize the land and mitigate human impact. Public access is strictly confined to a designated boardwalk to prevent further geological degradation. It is a rare geological site in Southern Ontario, characterized by its high iron oxide content which provides the deep red coloration.
