Interesting facts
1

The sky lakes are oligotrophic, meaning they are low in nutrients and high in clarity due to rain and snowmelt rather than groundwater inflow.

2

The distinctive white quartz cliffs are remnants of a Devonian-period sedimentary rock formation compressed by ancient tectonic forces.

3

The park's carriage roads were built by local estate owners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to facilitate horse-drawn transport between luxury mountain hotels.

4

The preserve contains rare pitch pine-scrub oak barrens, an ecosystem that requires periodic fire to maintain its structure.

5

The water in the sky lakes has a low pH, typically ranging between 4.0 and 5.0, which prevents many common fish species from thriving.

Overview

Minnewaska State Park Preserve sits atop the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, New York, at an elevation of approximately 2,000 feet. The park encompasses over 24,000 acres of protected land, defined by its rugged white quartz conglomerate cliffs and dense hardwood forests. Three distinct sky lakes—Minnewaska, Awosting, and Maratanza—are perched high on the plateau, each characterized by naturally acidic, clear water. The preserve features over 50 miles of carriage roads and 35 miles of footpaths suitable for hiking, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Awosting Falls is a prominent feature, dropping 60 feet into a plunge pool near the park entrance. Glacial history is evident in the polished rock surfaces and erratic boulders found throughout the landscape. The area is part of the larger Shawangunk Mountains, providing critical habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including rare plant communities.

Insider tips

Arrive early on weekends and holidays, as the parking lots reach capacity and close access to incoming traffic.

Carry a physical map or download offline files, as cellular service is intermittent or non-existent throughout the higher elevations of the ridge.

Wear sturdy, broken-in footwear, as the carriage roads and trails consist of loose shale, gravel, and uneven rock.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in areas outside of designated guarded zones, as the steep, slippery rock edges and cold water are hazardous.

Good to know

The park remains open year-round, but specific trails or carriage roads may close seasonally for mud or ice conditions.

Etiquette

Carry out all trash, stay on marked trails to protect sensitive alpine vegetation, and keep pets on a leash at all times.
