Overview

The Church of the Magi, or Igreja dos Reis Magos, is one of the oldest colonial religious structures in Brazil, dating back to 1580. Located in the Nova Almeida district of Serra, it was built by Jesuit missionaries atop a high cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The church architecture represents the transition between the simple coastal Jesuit style and more decorative colonial influences. It houses one of the earliest colonial oil paintings in Brazil, attributed to the Jesuit Brother João de Alvim. The site is a National Historic Heritage site protected by IPHAN since 1943. The complex includes the remnants of the old Jesuit residence and school. Visitors can access an expansive panoramic view of the coastline from the church grounds.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or lean on the external perimeter walls, as they are fragile historical structures.
