Overview

Torre Guaceto is a Marine Protected Area and State Nature Reserve encompassing 1,200 hectares of sea and 1,100 hectares of protected land on the Adriatic coast of Puglia. The site features a 16th-century Aragonese watchtower, Torre Guaceto, which serves as the reserve's landmark. The landscape consists of a diverse mosaic of sand dunes, Mediterranean scrub, wetlands, and olive groves. It is a vital nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, which is monitored by the local Sea Turtle Rescue Center. The marine zone is divided into three levels of protection, with a strictly forbidden 'Zone A' core to preserve biodiversity. The coastline includes secluded sandy coves and rocky shores. The area functions as a living laboratory for sustainable agriculture, specifically focusing on the production of Fiaschetto tomatoes. It is managed by a consortium involving the municipalities of Carovigno and Brindisi and the WWF.

Use the dedicated eco-shuttle provided by the visitor center to reach the beach area, as private vehicles are restricted.

Bring your own snorkel gear, as the biodiversity in the shallow waters is best experienced just a few meters from the shore.

Visit the Sea Turtle Rescue Center near the visitor entrance to see ongoing conservation efforts.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive private cars directly to the shoreline, as restricted-access zones are heavily monitored and fined.

Good to know

The visitor center and shuttle services typically operate with increased frequency during the summer months and may operate on limited weekend-only schedules in the winter.

Etiquette

Strictly pack out all trash, avoid picking vegetation or disturbing wildlife, and remain on marked trails to protect the dunes.
