Overview

The Daibutsuden is the main hall of Rissyakuji Temple, a Tendai sect mountain temple complex founded in 860 AD. It is constructed entirely of beech wood, making it one of the oldest wooden structures in the Tohoku region. The hall houses a prominent gilded Buddha statue measuring five meters in height. Located on a steep mountainside, the temple is accessed via a stone staircase comprising over 1,000 steps. The site is famous for the haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who composed a renowned verse here in 1689. The temple grounds incorporate numerous rock formations and caves carved into the cliff face. It serves as a center for Buddhist ascetic training. The area is heavily forested, changing significantly in appearance between the snowy winters and lush green summers.
