5

During the autumn migration season, millions of birds follow this coastline, making it a hotspot for ornithological research.

Overview

Ēvažu Stāvkrasts is the highest coastal cliff on the Gulf of Riga, reaching approximately 15 meters in height. Located within the Slītere National Park in the Kurzeme region, the site features a steep sandy bluff formed by post-glacial shoreline processes. A wooden staircase provides access from the forest trail down to the narrow beach below. The surrounding area consists of protected deciduous and coniferous woodlands characteristic of the Baltic coastal forest ecosystem. The site serves as a vital observation point for migratory birds, particularly during autumn movements along the Baltic-White Sea flyway. The geological profile of the cliff exposes layers of moraine and sedimentary deposits dating back thousands of years.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear as the forest paths and beach sand can be uneven or wet.

Bring binoculars if visiting during spring or autumn for birdwatching opportunities.

Carry repellent during the summer months, as the surrounding forest is dense and humid.

What to avoid

Do not stand directly at the base of the cliff wall as sand and debris falls occur sporadically.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to prevent soil erosion; do not attempt to climb the face of the cliff.
