Its primary conservation priority is the protection of the marsh deer, a vulnerable species from which the park derives its name. The terrain is characterized by flooding meadows, shallow lagoons, and gallery forests. It is managed by the Argentine National Parks Administration to maintain biodiversity in a region impacted by industrial encroachment. Birdwatchers frequent the area to observe hundreds of recorded species, including the endangered crown eagle. The visitor center serves as the main entry point to the trail network.
