Overview

Tappeinerweg is a nearly 4-kilometer long elevated promenade located on the slopes of the Küchelberg hill above Merano. Designed as an alpine-mediterranean botanical walkway, it features a diverse collection of flora including palms, agaves, bamboo, and Aleppo pines. The path maintains a gentle gradient, making it accessible for casual walkers and families. It offers panoramic views of the Merano valley floor, the Adige river, and the surrounding Texel Group mountains. Commissioned by Franz Tappeiner in the late 19th century, the path was donated to the city of Merano to promote health and recreation. The walkway connects the city center to the village of Gratsch. Along the route, visitors encounter varying microclimates that support both hardy alpine vegetation and sun-loving Mediterranean species. The entire trail is paved and widely considered one of the most scenic urban promenades in the Alps.

Insider tips

Start from the Gratsch side if you prefer a slight downhill walk toward the town center.

Bring sun protection, as the southern exposure provides little shade during midday in the summer months.

Water fountains are located at various intervals along the path to refill reusable bottles.

What to avoid

Attempting the walk during a heatwave without water or skipping the side paths that lead to the Gunpowder Tower.

Etiquette

Maintain a steady walking pace to allow others to pass; stay on the paved path to protect the botanical zones.
