Interesting facts
1

Nariaiji Temple, where the overlook is located, was founded in 704 AD during the early Nara period.

2

The temple is famously associated with the 'Kannon Who Grants Wishes,' which is said to have saved the life of a monk by transforming into a log.

3

Unlike the popular 'Matanozoki' (upside-down) view at Viewland, the Nariai perspective captures the full curvature of the sandbar from a higher altitude.

4

The temple grounds contain a five-story pagoda that was rebuilt in the early 20th century.

Overview

The Mt. Nariai Panoramic Overlook provides a high-elevation perspective of Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most scenic views. Located near the summit of Mt. Nariai, it offers a distinct vantage point of the sandbar stretching across the Miyazu Bay. The site is situated within the grounds of Nariaiji Temple, the 28th temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage route. Visitors gain access to the viewpoint via the mountain access road near the temple's main grounds. It is often referred to as the 'Matanoki' view, as it provides a different angle than the Amanohashidate Viewland on the opposite side of the bay.

Insider tips

Check visibility forecasts for the bay as low cloud cover can obscure the view.

Combine this visit with a tour of the Nariaiji Temple main hall and pagoda.

Bring light layers as the temperature at the summit is consistently cooler than at the bay level.

What to avoid

Do not mistake this for the Amanohashidate Viewland, which is on the opposite, southern side of the bay.

Good to know

Accessible year-round, though mountain road access may be restricted during heavy winter snowfall.

Etiquette

Respect the temple grounds by maintaining a quiet volume and avoiding entering restricted religious areas.
