Overview

Kawaragejigoku, meaning 'Hell of Kawarage,' is an expansive, barren volcanic landscape in Yuzawa, Akita, characterized by sulfurous vents and yellowish-white rocky terrain. The area serves as an active caldera, resulting from volcanic activity that prevents vegetation from growing in the central basin. Visitors can access a marked trail leading to Oyu-daki, one of the few natural hot spring waterfalls in Japan. The ground emits steam, and the smell of sulfur is pervasive throughout the site. The landscape is part of the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park and was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. It has been a site of mountain asceticism practice for centuries, historically revered as a gateway to the afterlife in local religious belief.
