Overview

Kanba Falls is a 110-meter-high, 20-meter-wide cascade located within the Kanba Falls Prefectural Natural Park in Maniwa, Okayama. It is officially designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The site is noted for its population of approximately 180 wild Japanese macaques that roam freely near the visitor trails. The waterfall originates from underground springs in the limestone karst plateau of Hiruzen. The volume of water creates a distinct mist in the surrounding valley. Visitors access the falls via a paved walking path that leads from the park entrance to the base of the waterfall. The area is heavily forested, featuring Japanese cedar and beech trees.

Insider tips

Do not feed or touch the wild monkeys, as they can become aggressive when food is present.

Bring comfortable walking shoes with good grip, as the path near the waterfall can be damp and slippery.

Check the local Maniwa weather forecast, as heavy rain can cause the park management to restrict access to the falls for safety.

What to avoid

Attempting to feed the monkeys or bringing open food containers onto the hiking trails, which invites opportunistic stealing.

Etiquette

Keep a respectful distance from the monkeys; do not make sudden movements or show teeth, which they interpret as a threat.
