Overview

The Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń is the largest church in Poland and one of the largest in the world by floor area. Designed by Barbara Bielecka, the postmodern structure features a central dome topped with a gold-plated lantern and a 141.5-meter-tall bell tower. The complex is situated in the village of Licheń Stary and serves as a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The basilica's footprint corresponds to the date of the year with 365 windows, 52 doorways, and 12 main pillars. Construction took place between 1994 and 2004, funded entirely by donations from pilgrims. The interior houses a miraculous 18th-century painting of Our Lady of Licheń. The surrounding grounds include a Stations of the Cross path, a Calvary hill, and a park with an artificial lake.
