Overview

False Cape State Park is a 4,321-acre coastal preserve situated on a thin barrier spit between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay. It remains one of the few undeveloped areas along the Virginia coast, accessible only by foot, bicycle, or boat. The park features a maritime forest dominated by loblolly pine, live oak, and American holly. Nine miles of primitive hiking and biking trails traverse dunes, salt marshes, and scrub habitats. Wildlife sightings frequently include wild horses, bald eagles, and various migratory waterfowl. Primitive backcountry camping is permitted in designated sites by reservation. The park's isolation is maintained by the adjoining Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which serves as the primary gateway. No motorized vehicles are allowed within the park boundaries. The terrain consists of sandy paths and elevated boardwalks through sensitive ecological zones.

Insider tips

Bring significantly more water than you expect to drink, as there are no potable water sources within the park interior.

Check the tide charts and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge tram schedule before departing, as access depends on these factors.

Apply heavy-duty insect repellent, as the marshy areas are home to aggressive biting flies and mosquitoes.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive a standard vehicle into the park, as the sand is impassable and motorized access is strictly prohibited.

Good to know

Access through the adjacent National Wildlife Refuge is restricted during certain seasonal bird migration periods; check current refuge access status before visiting.

Etiquette

Practice 'Leave No Trace' principles; pack out all trash, stay on marked trails to protect dune vegetation, and do not approach or feed the feral horses.
