Overview

The Venetian Castle of Bohali sits atop Bochali hill, overlooking Zakynthos town and the Ionian Sea. Originally constructed in the 15th century, the site served as the island's capital and administrative center during the Venetian occupation. Seismic activity, specifically the 1953 earthquake, destroyed much of the interior, leaving the exterior walls and fortifications as the primary remains. Visitors can explore the remnants of the main entrance gate, bastions, and the coat of arms representing the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark. A collection of historical cannons remains positioned along the perimeter walls. The site offers a panoramic vantage point covering the town of Zakynthos and the harbor below. Much of the original stonework has been overtaken by local Mediterranean vegetation, including pine trees and wild shrubs.

Photo spot

The western bastions overlooking the town harbor provide the most expansive panoramic view of the coastline.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as the ground within the ruins is uneven and covered in loose gravel and vegetation.

Bring sun protection and water, as there is limited shade once you pass the entrance gates.

The walk to the castle is steep; consider this if you have limited mobility.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the perimeter walls or straying off the marked paths, as drop-offs can be steep and poorly marked.

Good to know

Occasionally closed during periods of extreme high wind or severe weather warnings for public safety.

Etiquette

Avoid climbing on the unstable masonry or ancient walls to ensure preservation and personal safety.
