Overview

The Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune is the oldest continuously inhabited abbey in the Western world, founded in 515 AD by Sigismund, King of the Burgundians. It is built directly against a vertical limestone cliff in the Rhone Valley, marking the site where Saint Maurice and the Theban Legion were allegedly martyred. The site contains a Roman-era archaeological zone featuring remains of baptisteries and ancient foundations. Its treasury houses one of the most significant collections of Merovingian and Carolingian goldwork in Europe. The basilica was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1948. Visitors can access the archaeological site via a modern path that tunnels through the rock base. The abbey remains an active monastery for the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine.
