Overview

Faro de la Mesa Roldán is a functional lighthouse situated atop a volcanic volcanic table mountain, 222 meters above sea level within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Originally constructed in 1863, the current structure includes a 1980s lighthouse tower adjacent to an older, decommissioned tower from the 19th century. The site provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the Mediterranean coastline, including the Playa de los Muertos and the Carboneras bay. It serves as an active maritime navigation aid for the Almería coast. The surrounding terrain is a protected geological site characterized by fossilized coral reefs from the Messinian period.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker, as the elevated location is subject to strong coastal gusts.

Wear hiking boots with good grip due to the loose, rocky surface of the mesa trail.

Bring binoculars to scan for marine traffic and local raptors often seen circling the cliffs.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the fenced-off historic tower or wandering off the path toward the steep cliff edges.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to avoid damaging sensitive fossilized coral formations; pack out all trash.
