Overview

Palamidi Fortress is an 18th-century Venetian military complex perched 216 meters above the city of Nafplio. The structure consists of eight independent bastions connected by defensive walls, designed by engineers Giaxich and Lasalle. It was constructed primarily during the second period of Venetian rule between 1711 and 1714. The fortress is renowned for its strategic design, which allowed each bastion to function independently if others were captured. It served as a major prison for political figures after the Greek War of Independence, most notably housing Theodoros Kolokotronis. The site covers a significant hilltop area, requiring extensive walking on uneven, historic stone surfaces. It remains one of the best-preserved examples of Venetian baroque military architecture in the Mediterranean.
