Overview

Kongo Sammai-in is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Koyasan founded in 1223 by Hojo Masako to memorialize her husband, Minamoto no Yoritomo. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and functions as both a temple and a shukubo, providing overnight lodging for visitors. The temple grounds contain a two-story pagoda, known as the Taho-to, which is designated as a National Treasure. The Taho-to is the oldest structure of its kind on Mount Koya, dating back to the Kamakura period. The temple features a collection of historic statues, including images of Dainichi Nyorai. Visitors can participate in morning prayers and Goma fire rituals when staying overnight. The temple is surrounded by ancient Japanese cedar trees, creating a secluded environment away from the more central Koyasan tourist paths.
