Overview

Castillo Almodóvar del Río is a restored medieval fortress situated on a hill overlooking the Guadalquivir River valley. Originally established as a Roman fortification, the site was significantly expanded during the Umayyad Caliphate in 740 AD. The structure underwent extensive neo-medieval reconstruction in the early 20th century under the direction of Count Rafael Desmaissières. It features a complex layout with nine towers, including the prominent Homage Tower. The castle served as a filming location for the seventh season of the television series Game of Thrones, representing the House Tyrell seat, Highgarden. Visitors can explore various chambers, courtyards, and dungeons within the fortified walls. The site provides panoramic views of the surrounding Cordoban countryside and olive groves. It remains one of the best-preserved examples of military architecture in Andalusia. The current layout retains significant defensive features, including curtain walls and barbicans.
