Overview

Pragmahal is a 19th-century Italian Gothic palace located in the heart of Bhuj, commissioned by Rao Pragmalji II. Designed by Colonel Henry Saint Clair Wilkins, the palace features a distinct fusion of Venetian Gothic and Corinthian architectural styles. It is constructed from red sandstone and showcases extensive use of Italian marble and stained glass. The site includes a prominent 45-meter high clock tower that provides an elevated view of Bhuj city. The main durbar hall displays an array of stuffed animals, chandeliers, and classical statues. A significant portion of the palace remains preserved as a museum, reflecting the lifestyle of the Jadeja dynasty. The structure survived the devastating 2001 Bhuj earthquake, though it suffered notable damage to its upper sections. It serves as a primary example of colonial-era influence on traditional Kutchi architecture.
