Overview

The Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest wetlands in Turkey, formed at the point where the Kızılırmak River empties into the Black Sea. It encompasses roughly 56,000 hectares of lagoons, marshes, reed beds, and sandy beaches. The sanctuary is a critical stopover point on the Black Sea-Mediterranean migratory bird route. It is home to over 350 bird species, including endangered ones like the Dalmatian pelican and the pygmy cormorant. The area is designated as a Ramsar site of international importance. It also serves as a habitat for wild water buffalo and various endemic plant species. Much of the delta is protected as a strictly managed wildlife development area.
