Overview

Nishi Hongan-ji is the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha sect of Buddhism and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. It serves as the primary example of Momoyama period architecture in Kyoto. The complex features two massive main halls, the Goei-do (Founder's Hall) and the Amida-do, which are connected by a covered corridor. The Goei-do is among the largest wooden structures in the world. Several buildings, including the Karamon Gate, are designated National Treasures of Japan. The temple grounds contain a 400-year-old ginkgo tree that is protected as a natural monument. Unlike many other Kyoto temples, it remains an active religious center for its followers. The site layout preserves the traditional grand scale of 17th-century Buddhist temple complexes.
