Overview

Berat Castle, known as Kala, is a unique 13th-century fortress that remains a living residential neighborhood rather than a sterile ruin. It is perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Osum River and the town of Berat. The site features a mix of Byzantine, Ottoman, and medieval architecture within its massive defensive walls. Visitors can explore narrow cobblestone streets, several active Byzantine-era churches, and the ruins of the Red Mosque. The castle grounds contain the Onufri Museum, which houses an extensive collection of 16th-century religious icons. It is one of the largest still-inhabited fortresses in the Balkan region. The site provides panoramic views of the surrounding Tomorr and Shpirag mountains. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastër.

Photo spot

The western ramparts offer a clear view looking down at the white Ottoman-era houses of the Mangalem district and the Osum River.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip, as the original cobblestone paths inside the walls are uneven and become slippery when wet.

Bring a small flashlight if you plan to explore the interior of the smaller, unlit church ruins.

Expect a significant uphill walk; pace yourself if visiting during peak afternoon heat.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive a large vehicle up the narrow, steep winding roads leading to the entrance as parking space at the top is extremely limited.

Etiquette

Dress modestly when entering the active churches within the walls, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.
