Overview

Fuerte de la Galea is an 18th-century coastal battery located on the cliffs of Getxo, overlooking the mouth of the Nervión River. Construction began in 1740 to defend the port of Bilbao from English naval incursions. The fortress features a distinct semicircular shape and was built using local sandstone. It saw active military service during the Napoleonic Wars and the Carlist Wars. Today, the site stands as a restored historical monument managed by local authorities. It remains one of the few surviving examples of its kind in the Basque Country. The site is integrated into the coastal path, offering direct views of the Bay of Biscay and the Punta Galea lighthouse.
