Overview

Saint Elisabeth's Cathedral is the largest church in Slovakia and the easternmost example of high-Gothic architecture in Europe. Located in the heart of Košice, the structure features a double-aisled nave design that is rare in medieval architecture. Construction spanned from the late 14th century to 1508, resulting in a complex history of fire damage and subsequent restorations. The interior houses a significant winged altar dedicated to Saint Elisabeth, completed in 1477. Visitors can access the Urban Tower and the Royal Oratory, which provide views of the city center. The building displays intricate stone carvings, including a famous self-portrait of the master builder among the gargoyles. Its floor plan is based on a Latin cross with five naves. The current restoration projects have preserved its distinctive multi-colored roof tiles.
